Volunteer Opportunities

Please help us with our upcoming restoration project on September 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that is focused on protecting the Saltwater Estuary at the mouth of Sequalitchew Creek.

 Here are the details:

  • Place cedar post and rail fencing in the vicinity of the Wilkes Observatory to stop pedestrians from using a steep trail that terminates in the Saltwater Estuary at the base of the bluff.
  • Pull Scot’s Broom in the vicinity of the Wilkes Observatory.

Long-term goals for this site:

  • Re-vegetate eroded Steep Trail, with native plantings and erosion control measures.
  • Place interpretive signs to explain methodology and ecology of the estuary, both at Wilkes Observatory and along Sequalitchew Creek Trail*.
  • Place signs to direct users towards the Switchback Trail (pending approval of the City of DuPont)
  • Improve Switchback Trail as needed (pending approval of the City of DuPont)
  •

  • Re-direct runners/bikers from vicinity of the Wilkes Observatory to existing Switchback Trail and across the Sequalitchew Creek on on existing bridge, in the vicinity of the old Powerhouse, to preserve and protect the Saltwater Estuary at the mouth of Sequalitchew Creek.

SCWC is working with DuPont Public Works on this project. The project will also go before the DuPont Parks Agency, and Tourism Board for more long-term goals of trail design, tying in historic elements, and branding.

*The 1994 Settlement Agreement calls for “Lone Star (now CalPortland) and WRECO, in cooperation with Ecology, agree to place educational signs and native vegetation adjacent to the trail in the location of the salt marsh to educate the public and discourage physical intrusions into the marsh area.” It is now year 2010, and no signs are present. SCWC is happy to help take care of part of this issue at the top of the bluff, and would sincerely like to invite CalPortland and WRECO to fulfill their end of the agreement along the creek trail, as called for in the 1994 Settlement Agreement.
