On September 13, 2010, the DuPont Planning Agency will host an open house to discuss future goals and use of the shorelines of the state based on the SMA and draft DuPont Shoreline Inventory and Characterization Report. The open house will include a presentation by Ecology staff regarding the update process, a presentation by city consultants regarding the draft report and discussion of the next steps in the process. The public is welcome to join staff and consultants on a walk to the shoreline access area at DuPont City Hall, 1700 Civic Drive, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, weather permitting. Check the City of DuPont website under “Planning Department” for further details and information. You can also email questions to smpupdate@ci.dupont.wa.us.

Here is a link to the official public notice.

The Shoreline Management Act (SMA) requires the City of DuPont to update its Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The SMP is a planning document that sets policy and establishes regulations for development of shorline areas that qualify as “shorelines of the state.” These regulated areas include the adjacent uplands within 200 feet of the ordinary high water mark and associated wetlands and floodplain areas.

Anyone interested in this topic should really read The 20th Century History of Sequalitchew Creek document, found on this sites Archives page. It documents how Sequalitchew Creek was removed from the Shoreline Management Act, and the controversy that still exists today as to why it should be added back.
