Your Immediate Attention is Needed

Hello!

What a fantastic turnout for the Public Hearing on October 11!  Thanks to everyone who commented in opposition of dewatering, and the draining of our portion of the Vashon Aquifer.  There were many, many fantastic letters of support!  CalPortland did have a few of their vendors/business associates comment in support:  Island Tug and Barge, Tucci and Sons Trucking nd even Basalite Concrete Products; that’s not surprising I guess.

City Council said they are still welcoming comments and questions; so, keep them coming!  Here’s where to write:

CITY OF DUPONT

During the first public hearing on September 27, city council heard letter after letter read by the clerk and by those attending that they oppose dewatering.

They need to keep hearing this message

Since public comments are still being taken, we have a challenge for our supporters.   Here’s what we’re asking you to do:

Write a short letter to city council…explain that you oppose a mine expansion that involves dewatering. Ask five friends and neighbors to do the same.

What should you say in your letter?  Here is what we suggest:

Encourage council to go back to the table and remove the south parcel from the agreement.

Explain that you’re not necessarily opposed to a mine expansion…..just dewatering.

Why should you oppose dewatering our aquifer in DuPont?

  • Dewatering will cause the entire length Sequalitchew Creek to go dry-forever.
  • “Freshwater seeps” at our beach that are very important for salmon and marine habitat will be severely degraded-permanently.
  • There are still unanswered questions about our future drinking water quality if dewatering occurs.
  • Edmond Marsh will be permanently harmed and the wetland habitat for the many types of frogs that live there will be eliminated…forever.  How sad will that be?

Bottom line….it’s time to come off the sidelines and tell the city that you care about what happens to our community.  Time is of the essence!

Thanks for your support,
Sequalitchew Creek Watershed Council
